Restoration of AMU’s academic excellence would be my first priority: Professor Azis

Aligarh : Renowned scientist Professor P.K. Abdul Azis assumed charge as Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University here Monday. Professor Azis was serving as the Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science & Technology (Kochi) before his new assignment at Aligarh.

Addressing a crowded press conference soon after assuming the charge, Professor Azis expressed concern over the declining academic standard of AMU and said that restoration of the University's academic excellence would be his first priority.

He also promised to take all necessary steps to upgrade Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology to the status of IIT.

He expressed concern over the decline in the standard of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and promised to bring it at par with the best Medical Institutions in India.

Professor Azis said he was counting on the support of the teaching faculty and non-teaching staff to help regain the status of the University as an academic centre of international repute.

Professor Azis also held a joint meeting with Deans of all faculties, principals of colleges running under the University besides members of the Executive Council, and sought their suggestions to make the academic environment on the campus better.

Professor Azis reached Aligarh Sunday evening, and was warmly welcomed by the University community. On reaching Aligarh, he went straight to the grave of the University's founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, where he laid a wreath of flowers and paid his respects. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome, and was accompanied to his residence on a carriage by the Students' Union.
