Washington : The US and Russia have welcomed Pakistan's decision to join a global initiative to combat nuclear terrorism.
"The United States and Russia welcome the decision of the government of Pakistan to become a partner nation of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism," the US State Department said in a statement Monday.
The global initiative, jointly announced by the US and Russia at the July 2006 G8 Summit in the Russian city of St. Petersburg, aims at developing international cooperation to combat nuclear terrorism and applies to civilian nuclear facilities and activities.
Pakistan Saturday last week said it would join the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism, but said its participation would not cover the nuclear facilities or activities of its military.
Pakistan has been a strong ally of the US in the war against terrorism since the Sep 11, 2001, attacks in America.
