Militants ambush convoy: 2 soldiers killed, 5 civilians among 9 injured

Srinagar, June 15 (NAK): Two security personnel were killed and nine people, including five civilians, were wounded when militants ambushed an army convoy in the appeal town of Sopore in North Kashmir, Friday morning.

Giving details of the incident, a senior police officer told News Agency of Kashmir unidentified number of militants ambushed an army convoy, when it reached at main chowk of Sopore, this afternoon.

Militants resorted to indiscriminate firing and lobbed at least three grenades towards the vehicles of the security forces creating panic in the area.

One army personal and a Central Reserve Police Force jawan were killed, while five civilians and four soldiers sustained injuries in the attack.

Eyewitnesses told NAK that militants attacked the convoy from the two sides spraying bullets on the soldiers. Driver of one of the vehicle fell to one of the bullet and was killed on the spot. He has been identified as Kanta Rao of 312 Infantry Regiment.

A CRPF personal, who was posted nearby, identified as constable Nissar Ahmed Lone s/o Ghulam Nabi Lone R/O Anantnag Mandi of 177 Bn CRPF was also killed.

Police identified the injured soldiers as Naib-Subedar Ajeet Singh of 17 Sikh Regiment, Sepoy Pawan Chand of 15 RR, Sepoy Badal Lal of 15 RR and Sepoy Mukesh Kumar of 22 RR.

The civilians, who were injured in the attack, were identified as Manzoor Ahmed Untoo s/o Abdul Khaliq of Sidiq Colony Sopore, Abdul Rashid Ganie son of Muhammad Ramzan of Batengoo Sopore, Muhammad Altaf Marazi son of Abdul Rashid of Khushal Matoo Sopore, Dental Surgeon Dr. Zaffar Ahmed and Mohammed Subhan of Handwara.

Reinforcements were rushed to the area and a search operation was launched. However, no arrest was made till late this evening as militants managed to escape from the spot. (NAK)
