The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief was being taken in a convoy of four cars when three people appeared and hurled four bombs near Dumaria village in Deoghar district, around 350 km from here, at 1 p.m., police said.

He was being taken back from Giridih to Dumka when the attack took place.

The bombs missed the vehicles and fell instead on the road. Three of the bombs exploded while one live bomb was later seized by police. Police have detained two people in this connection.

"We are trying to find out whether Maoist rebels attacked the convoy or there is another angle to the attack," said a police official.

Soren is currently serving life imprisonment in Dumka jail for the murder of his secretary Shashinath Jha.

On Monday he had to appear in a Giridih court in another murder case. The Kudko murder case is related to the killing of three people over a dispute involving two goats in 1974. Ten people, including Soren, were made named as accused.

Eight people have already been acquitted and one died during the trial. Soren surrendered in the case in 2004. The trial is on in the Giridih court.
