A railway spokesperson said the accident took place near Dihakhu in North Cachar Hills district, about 180 km south of Assam's main city of Guwahati.

"Seven wagons and the two engines of the train derailed and fell into a stream, while eight wagons were dangling precariously. Initial reports say seven people were killed and seven injured in the accident," a senior Northeast Frontier Railways spokesman told IANS.

The train was bound for Silchar in Assam carrying rice.

"The driver is among those killed in the accident. Some of the victims were porters and railway employees," the official said.

A train carrying rescue workers and medical teams was rushed to the accident site located in a hilly terrain.
