Talks on spectrum sharing are on: Antony

New Delhi : Defence Minister A.K. Antony said Monday talks were on for releasing additional radio frequencies for India's booming telecom industry.

"We are committed to the expansion of the system. But, we also have to address the concerns of the armed forces for a safe and dedicated network," Antony told reporters on the sidelines of a defence accounts function.

"Discussions are on and we are trying to sort out the issue at the earliest," he added.

The defence ministry controls India's radio frequencies.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had long been demanding for the release of 42.5 megahertz of spectrum for the growth of the mobile phone operators who are bringing out scheme after scheme to attract more and more subscribers.

Without the additional spectrum, some of India's telecom operators would be forced to make some major changes in their business plans, sources in the telecom ministry said.
