The areas bordering Chhattisgarh and Orissa were put on alert as Maoists in those states are also observing the economic blockade, which is to protest exploitation of natural resources and setting up of special economic zones.

Police officials in the districts affected by Maoist violence have been asked to take all precautions to foil Maoists attacks.

The rebels are reportedly also planning to avenge the killings of their leaders by the state police.

The police shot dead Maoist leader S. Rajamouli in an alleged gun battle at Dharmavaram town of Anantapur district, bordering Karnataka, on June 22.

Rajamouli, the mastermind of the assassination attempt on then Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in October 2003, headed the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Karnataka.

The CPI-Maoist has alleged that Rajamouli was arrested in Kollam in Kerala and gunned down in a stage gun battle. It has warned of reprisal attacks.

Security has been beefed up at power installations.
