Raipur : Heavy rainfall Saturday inundated vast areas of land in Chhattisgarh marooning thousands of people. All 18 districts received heavy rainfall – over 440 mm – due to a depression over Orissa. Raipur alone received 297 mm of rainfall, the weather department said.
"The depression over Orissa has resulted in record rainfall all over the state since Friday evening. After a brief relief in the during the day Saturday, the state is likely to witness another spell of heavy rainfall through the night," a local metrological department bulletin said.
"We have initial reports of about 50,000 people in Raipur and Bastar divisions marooned due to the rainfall. They urgently need to be evacuated to safer places, the situation may go out of control if the rain continues tonight," a relief department official said.
The incessant rain has severely hit normal life and thousands of people living in the low-lying areas of Raipur, Bilaspur, Mahasamund and Durg districts have been marooned.
The authorities have started to evacuate people to safer places.
Most roads in the Bastar region are reported to be flooded. The Naraybapur-Kondagaon road in the area has been closed due to flooding.
In the state capital here, water has entered many colonies and most streets are waterlogged.
