Washington : The US and Russia might reach an agreement over enhancing civilian nuclear cooperation and preventing the spread of nuke weapons soon, according to White House officials.
"It's likely that it (agreement) will come to a conclusion in the next few days," an unidentified White House official was quoted as saying in media reports here Friday.
Under the initiative, the report said, Washington and Moscow would guarantee countries access to nuclear power and fuel to be used for reactors that are designed to be "proliferation resistant".
"In return, those countries would need to give up nuclear enrichment.
"An announcement of the agreement will possibly be made a day after a two-day meeting between US President George W. Bush and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the Bush family retreat in Kennebunkport, Maine," the official said.
The US-Russia summit, aiming at soothing tensions between the two countries over issues such as a proposed US missile shield, human rights and the Iraq war, is due to begin on Sunday.
