Colombo : The Sri Lankan Navy said Saturday that over 10 Tamil Tiger sea wing members were killed in a skirmish off the eastern coast.

The clash took place Friday night in the sea off Pulmoddai, 295 km east of here, navy spokesman D.K.P. Dassanayake said.

Dassanayake said the navy spotted 26 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) boats in the seas and launched an attack.

"We destroyed two of them and six more were badly damaged," he said, adding that the navy's fast attack Dvora craft then gave chase to the fleeing boats.

Two sailors were injured and over 10 LTTE members were believed killed in the clash.

Clashes between the Tamil Tigers and government troops in the island's northeast have increased since the end of 2005 with more than 4,000 people killed.
