New Delhi : Both houses of parliament were adjourned for a second time Monday as Congress, Left parties and Samajwadi Party members disrupted proceedings over the issue of staged police killings in Gujarat.
As soon as both houses reassembled after an hour's adjournment, the members appeared to be in no mood to relent, forcing the presiding officers to adjourn for two more hours – till 2 p.m.
Earlier, when the houses assembled for the day, Congress, Samajwadi Party and Left members were on their feet, protesting against the fake police killings in Gujarat.
Repeated appeals for order by the presiding officers fell on deaf ears, forcing them to adjourn the houses till noon.
Immediately after Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee welcomed a Cuban parliamentary delegation, Ramjilal Suman (Samajwadi Party), Mohammed Salim (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and Madhusudan Mistry (Congress) raised the issue of the police killings in the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Gujarat.
When repeated pleas for restoring order failed to pacify members, Chatterjee adjourned the house.
When Lok Sabha reassembled in the afternoon, the members were unrelenting on the Gujarat issue. BJP members also raised the issue of the Sethusamudram canal in Tamil Nadu. They said Shipping Minister T.R. Baalu was "misleading the house" by saying the matter could not be raised in the house as it was sub-judice.
The Rajya Sabha too witnessed noisy scenes when it reassembled at noon, forcing a visibly annoyed chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat to suspend business for another two hours – till 2 p.m.
Three police officials are accused of killing Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausar Bi. The police are now looking for her remains near the house of arrested deputy inspector of police D.G. Vanzara.
