Dhaka : Promising batsman Manoj Tewari, who could have made his one-day international (ODI) debut during India's series against Bangladesh starting here Thursday, may well return home after hurting his right shoulder in a practice session here Tuesday.
Tewari underwent MRI and X-Ray tests, following which he was advised complete rest for up to five days, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said. The prolific Bengal batsman's arm was put in a sling.
This is the third injury scare for the Indian team in the last few days, following Sachin Tendulkar's twisted ankle and captain Rahul Dravid's nose injury during the preparatory camp in Kolkata. Tendulkar has been rested for the three-match ODI series, and will join the team for the two-match Test series later.
Tewari, 21, left the net session immediately and was treated with ice packs by team physiotherapist John Gloster.
The board said that the results of Tewari's tests were reviewed by an orthopaedic specialist, besides Gloster, and he has been advised complete rest.
Board secretary Niranjan Shah said that Tewari has been rested with his right arm in sling for three to five days. The batsman has been asked to refrain from any activity while conservative treatment has started.
His condition will be reviewed and overall condition of the shoulder reassessed once symptoms have subsided in five to seven days, he said.
"After this an overall plan and timeframe can be fully ascertained," Shah said.
Shah said that a decision regarding Tewari's possible replacement would be taken once chairman of the selection committee Dilip Vengsarkar reaches Dhaka and consults team management.
It is not clear when Vengsarkar will reach Dhaka.
Dravid, however, said it was not a serious injury. "He got injured while practicing but it is not a serious injury," he said.
