Three armed men broke into the home of Syed Hamid Raza, the court's deputy registrar of Pakistan, at around 4.30 a.m. and fatally wounded the official with several shots at him, the Aaj television news channel said.

The motive of the killing was not immediately clear but police did not rule out the possibility of a target killing.

"Apparently it looks like he was killed while putting up resistance during a robbery, but it could also be an assassination," a police official told the channel.

Acting Chief Justice Supreme Court, Rana Bhagwandas, visited Raza's family and expressed his condolences.

The incident occurred amid continuing violence and political turbulence over President Pervez Musharraf's suspension of chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry on March 9.
