London, May 17 (IANS) James Halloran, one of the founders of critical mass communication research who taught several Indian students over the years at the University of Leicester, died at the age of 80 on Wednesday.
Halloran, until he retired, was director of the Centre for Mass Communication Research at the university, which played a key role in formulating and conducting research in the field of mass communications.
Several Indian scholars and journalists studied at the centre during his directorship. Many of them earned PhD degrees under the supervision of Halloran. He wrote extensively on the relevance of communication research in the South.
Halloran was also for many years president of the International Association for Mass Communication Research.
