South Korea suffers first military casualty in Iraq

Seoul : The South Korea Defense Ministry said today that a South Korean soldier serving in Iraq was found shot dead yesterday and that it will send an investigative team to the Middle Eastern country to determine the circumstances of the death, South Korean news agency “Yonhap” reported.

According to the ministry, a 27-year-old first lieutenant, identified only by his surname Oh, was found dead with a gunshot wound at a barber shop inside the South Korean military camp in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil.

It was the first death of a South Korean soldier stationed in the Middle Eastern country since Seoul sent its troops to assist the U.S.-led coalition there.

The ministry said the investigative team will fly to Iraq later in the day, the agency said.
