Malaysia to hold 50th independence celebrations at London’s Convent Garden

Kuala Lumpur : Covent Garden, the entertainment centre for opera, theatre and street performances in London, will be transformed with the sights, sounds and flavours of Malaysia from June 6 to 10 June.

The week will be the highlight of Visit Malaysia Year 2007 and Malaysia’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations in the English capital.

The 50th Merdeka Celebration Press Secretariat said in a statement here Thursday that Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage Rais Yatim will lead a 120-member delegation consisting of dancers, musicians, artists, craftsmen and representatives from government agencies for the event.

“Throughout the week, Britons will be given an insight into Malaysia’s resplendent cultures,” the statement said.

Among the guests to be invited are Deputy British Prime Minister John Prescott and representatives from the British-Malaysia Society, which is made up of ex-servicemen and former British employees of the Malayan Civil Service, who served during pre-independent Malaya.
