London : A swarm of bumblebees forced a British passenger jet to turn back to base, delaying for 11 hours some 200 holidaymakers on their way to Faro, southern Portugal, the charter airline said Friday.
The Palmair Boeing 737 experienced an engine surge an hour into the flight from Bournemouth Thursday, meaning the aircraft had to return to Bournemouth to be checked over by engineers.
"It would appear that the engine has ingested a swarm of bees. This is not life-threatening because they come out of the back of the engine but we must check each fan for any possible damage," Palmair managing director David Skillicorn told the local newspaper, the Bournemouth Daily Echo, Friday.
