Jammu: A deputy superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir police was killed during a raid on the militants’ hideout in Bhaderwah town of district Doda, this evening, where two foreign militants are hold up in a residential building.
Reports reaching here revealed that based on specific inputs Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a combat operation at Udrana near State Bank of India behind Radio Station Bhaderwah, this evening.
Led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Operation Jammu Shaily Singh the SOG team reportedly cordoned off the house of one local resident Sajja, where a militant was hiding.
Sources told News Agency of Kashmir that soon after a column of police personnel, led by DySP, entered into the building, the holdup militant opened indiscriminate fire critically injuring the officer.
The DySP was immediately rushed to Bhaderwah Hospital, where he was declared as brought dead.
Block Medical Officer Bhaderwah Dr Ashraf told NAK over phone that the officer was brought to the hospital by a police team but doctors attending him declared him brought dead.
Sources said two militants were believed to be hold up in the building and a fierce gun battle was going on between the two sides, when the last report came in.
The deceased police officer was son of a police inspector, who was also killed in a militants’ attack in early nineties.
Sources said that Yodhveer Singh, father of the deceased officer was killed when Punjab based militants hurdled a hand grenade on him in Digiana area of Jammu.
It was reliably learnt that the DySP had rushed to Bhaderwah after getting specific inputs about the presence of militants in the area. “Bhaderwah police or the officer at District headquarter were not informed about the operation and the police team had specially rushed from Jammu to Bhaderwah”, a senior police officer said, on the condition of anonymity.
The building where the encounter was going on is hardly few meters away from the Radio Station, which also houses the office and residential quarters of senior police officers besides Radio Kashmir employees.
“The possibility of militants planning to attack the radio station can not be ruled out”, the police officer added.
