The appointment, filling a nine-month-long vacancy, comes close on the heels of the severe criticism by parliament's Standing Committee on Law and Justice, which in its report recently said "there should not be a gap even of a day" in the appointment of the Commission's head.

The present Law Commission was constituted after the term of the 17th Law Commission, headed by Justice M. Jagannadha Rao, had ended Aug 31 last year.

Justice Lakshmanan retired as apex court judge in March.
