London : Eating some quantity of onions regularly may reduce your heart disease risk, suggests a study that highlights why we should eat fruit and vegetables in our diet.
Flavonoids are compounds found in tea, onions, apples, red wine, strawberries, and even in bran and chocolate. Its consumption has been associated with a reduced heart disease, risk of cancer and diabetes.
The new study by the Institute of Food Research focused on one of the compounds quercetin, a powerful natural anti-oxidant, which is found in tea, onions, apples and red wine, reported the online edition of BBC News.
The researchers found it helps to prevent chronic inflammation, which can lead to thickening of the arteries.
A lower dose of the compounds – achievable by eating 100gm-200gm of onions – actually had a bigger impact, Paul Kroon said.
