Punjab forest department to go green

Chandigarh : The Punjab government will build an integrated forest complex with a green building certification at an estimated cost of Rs. 120 million.

Punjab’s Forests Minister Tikshan Sud said Tuesday that the complex, to be built at Mohali, 10 km from here, will address environmental concerns and incorporate green building design principles.

All the offices of the forests department, now scattered in Chandigarh and Mohali would be headquartered in the new building.

Sud said that this would help the department save over Rs. 6.5 million.

The building will be constructed in two phases – 70,000 square feet in the first phase and 60,000 square feet in the second and would be ready by March 2009.

The complex wiil have a tortoise shape layout.

Besides government offices, the building will also house a library and documentation centre, forest and wildlife gallery, conference and training facilities, Yoga and activity centre, ladies room and crèche, guest house and basement parking.
