Developed by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, the tougher certification is also meant to help companies in the city-state export their halal products.

The global halal market is said to be worth more than $2.1 trillion a year.

The current emphasis is on assuring the product does not contain ingredients prohibited by Islamic law. The new scheme will go further, setting standards for business operations in addition to ensuring that ingredients and preparation of food or health products qualify as halal.

Firms will be required to appoint people to monitor and document the preparation of halal products and to recommend corrective actions if they are tainted by alcohol or other prohibited ingredients.

Singapore’s predominantly Chinese population includes 14 percent who are Muslims.
