Bhubaneswar : The Orissa legislative assembly was adjourned Monday after unruly scenes between the members of opposition and the ruling parties over recent incidents of police baton charge against farmers and teachers in the state.
The winter session of the assembly had just begun when members of the Congress party shouted slogans and rushed to the well of the house with a banner depicting cartoons of police baton charge on farmers and teachers.
The opposition members demanded exclusive discussion on the recent police baton charge on teachers in some districts and on farmers in the district of Sambalpur.
The ruling party members protested and there was scuffle between the two groups. Speaker Maheswar Mohanty then adjourned the house till 12.30 p.m.
The situation did not improve when the house re-convened and Deputy Speaker Prahallad Dora adjourned the house further till 3.30 p.m.
“We want the house to discuss this issue before it goes for any other business,” former chief minister and leader of opposition in the state assembly J.B. Patnaik said.
Dozens of farmers were injured when the police charged on them near Hirakud dam in western Orissa’s Sambalpur district Nov 6. The farmers were protesting against diversion of irrigation water from the dam to industries.
Similarly more than 60 people were injured when police baton charged agitating teachers demanding regularisation of employment in different parts of the state Saturday.
