Washington : Former 100m world record holder Calvin Smith and 1936 Olympic decathlon champion Glenn Morris were among five inductees to the US Track and Field Hall of Fame Tuesday.
Those entrants also included nine-time US heptathlon champion Jane Frederick, two-time Olympic shot put runner-up George Woods and coach Elmer Drake, whose pupils included Olympic decathlon champion Rafer Johnson.
The formal induction will be staged Dec 1 in Honolulu at USA Track and Field’s annual meeting.
Smith was a two-time world outdoor 200m champion and took the bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. On July 3, 1983, he set the 100m world record of 9.93 seconds, lowering a mark by Jim Hines that had stood nearly 15 years.
He also joined Carl Lewis, Ron Brown and Sam Graddy in setting a world 4×100 relay record and capturing gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Morris, who died of heart failure in 1974, took part in only three decathlon competitions in his life, winning the 1936 Kansas Relays and US Olympic trials before capturing gold in the well-known Berlin Olympics.
