Ranchi : Doctors in Jharkhand are demanding security during shutdowns called by political parties and Maoist rebels.
On Monday, eight political parties and tribal organisations had called a shutdown to protest the attack on tribals in Assam.
The shutdown not only affected the common people, even doctors who were on emergency duty were not spared. Protesters damaged the vehicles of six doctors.
“It is the responsibility of the authorities to provide security during shutdowns. If the doctors are not provided security, then we will stop working,” Prabhat Kumar, secretary of the Indian Medical Association’s Ranchi unit, said Tuesday.
A woman doctor who was going to attend an emergency call at Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) Monday faced the brunt of the protestors’ fury. Her car was attacked and damaged near the residence of a senior superintendent of police.
Doctors face similar problems in rural areas during shutdowns called by Maoist rebels.
“We cannot move in rural areas and attend to patients during shutdowns called by Maoist rebels,” said Manish Kumar, a doctor.
