New Delhi : Ivana Furtado of Goa has retained the World under-8 girls’ title at the end of the eleventh and final round of the World Youth chess championships at Antalya, Turkey.
There were two other medals, both bronze, from Prince Bajaj in Boys Under-10 and Shalmali Gagare in Under-14 girls’ sections Wednesday, according to information received here.
It was a big drop from the 2006 haul, when India won five gold, two silver and three bronze for a record haul of 10 medals in Batumi, Georgia.
In the final round, pint-sized Ivana had the better of Zhansaya Abdumalik of Kazakhstan and was in a winning position, but agreed for a draw, which still gave the Indian the title. Ivana finished with 8.5 points from 11 rounds.
