Lucknow : Seventeen women from Bihar were killed Wednesday in a stampede in Uttar Pradesh’s Mughal Sarai railway station when passengers jumped out in panic following a snap ticket check.
All the women were returning home to Bihar after a dip in the Ganges in Varanasi, about 20 km from Mughal Sarai, for a ‘jeevit putrika puja’ to pray for long lives for their sons. Their trains stopped on two sides of a platform.
According to officials, the stampede took place around 1.40 p.m. when a sudden ticket check was ordered on the two trains – one going to Buxar and the other to Gaya – leading to people jumping out in panic.
