Tokyo to Limit Naval Mission in Indian Ocean

Tokio, Oct 3 (Prensa Latina) The Government of Japan is planning to limit the scope of its naval mission in the Indian Ocean after being accused of illegally supply US ships bound for Iraq.

Since 2001, in the wake of the 9 11 attacks and under a special law, Japan has been supplying fuel to ships and planes from the US and other countries deployed in Afghanistan.

However, Japanese media said in September that these troops have exceeded their legal prerogatives by even supplying a US aircraft carrier in Iraq.

Spokesman for the Japanese government Nobutaka Mashimira said an amendment of the law is expected to be tabled before Parliament in order to limit fuel supply to ships directly assigned to operations in Afghanistan.

Just a few days ago, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda admitted it would be impossible to extend the anti-terrorist law beyond expiration day in November 1st.

Opposition Democratic Party, in control of the Senate, rejects the legislation, which was created to allow participation of the archipelago in this sort of actions abroad.
