London : A British soldier killed in Afghanistan Thursday was the platoon commander of Prince William, the ministry of defence said here Saturday.
In a statement, the prince said he was “deeply saddened” at the death of Major Alexis Roberts, who had been his platoon commander at the military training academy Sandhurst. Prince William described him as a “good friend”.
Roberts, 32, from Kent, was serving with 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles when he was killed by an improvised explosive device Thursday. It brought to 82 the number of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2001.
