Jerusalem : Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip on Sunday fired a Katyusha rocket at southern Israel, local daily Ha’aretz reported on its website.

It quoted the police as saying that the rocket was identified as a Grad-type Katyusha, which landed in the southern Israeli city of Netivot, some 10 kilometers east of Gaza.

The rocket was the first to land in the Netivot area since Palestinian militants in Gaza starting firing rockets at Israel. No damage or injuries were caused, said the report.

Meanwhile, Palestinian militant faction Popular Resistance Committees have claimed responsibility for the attack, which coincided with a number of mortar attacks against southern Israel on Sunday.

The Russian-invented Katyusha has a longer range than the more makeshift Qassam rocket that has been fired by the militants in Gaza in the past several years at southern Israeli towns and villages.

The firing of Katyusha rockets from Gaza is rare but not unprecedented. About a year ago, Palestinians fired a Katyusha at the southern Israel city of Ashkelon.
