New Delhi: More than half dozen non-Muslims sentenced in Tihar jail are demonstrating a novel example by observing fasts during the month of Ramzan. According to jail official, KPA Sunilgupta, as Muslims’ month of Ramzan is passing by, prisoners sentenced in various jails of Tihar, numbering two to three thousand, are observing fasts. Although the jail administration provides all facilities for prisoners observing fasts, it also provides the facility of Sahri, pre-dawn meal, in exception of jail norms. It is said that during the start and the break of fasts, fast-observing prisoners sentenced in different cells are transferred in Baithak (meeting hall) so that they would not face any difficulty in observing the rituals of fasts. According to jail sources, all fast-observing prisoners also observe regular prayers during the month of Ramzan and in this situation the mosque constructed in the jail becomes too crowded. Among them are more that half dozen non-Muslim prisoners too, who enjoy Sahri and Iftar in their company and observe fasts. The most important fact is that acrimony and quarrel among prisoners that usually occur in jail barracks have diminished significantly.
