New Delhi : A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer involved in the investigation of a corruption case against former Uttar Pradesh chief secretary Akhand Pratap Singh was found dead under mysterious circumstances near a railway track in south Delhi, officials said Thursday.
Police found the body of Sultan Singh, a resident of Sadiq Nagar, near railway tracks in Okhla Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the body was sent for post-mortem examination and refused to comment if it was a case of murder or an accident.
“Sultan Singh was among the finest officers in the agency and was assisting in the Akhand Pratap Singh case when required,” said a CBI official.
“Delhi Police, which have been investigating the matter, have informed us that he was crossing the railway tracks when he was hit by a moving train. They said it could be a case of accident but the reason of death would be certain only after the post-mortem examination,” the official added.
Last month the CBI arrested Akhand Pratap Singh, a 1967 Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, for allegedly amassing illegal wealth, two years after it had registered a disproportionate assets case against him.
He retired as Uttar Pradesh chief secretary in December 2003.
According to the CBI, he had acquired properties in prime areas of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Lucknow, Bahraich and Nainital. He is also alleged to possess several lavish cars.
Sultan Singh’s relatives said he was under pressure and was not getting along well with some of his senior officers.
“He was under pressure and was ill-treated by some senior officials. They used to call him at odd hours in the night for no reasons. We believe that he was murdered,” alleged Sultan Singh’s son-in-law Ajay Singh.
The officer is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
