According to police, heavily armed guerrillas fired indiscriminately at a road opening party (ROP) of the 32 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) near Wattergam village, 58 km from here, early Thursday.

“The attack on the RR patrol was sudden. One JCO (junior commissioned officer) and a trooper died on the spot. The troops also retaliated,” a police officer said.

Though the area was immediately surrounded by security forces, no one was detained.

The unilateral ceasefire by the UJC, the Muzaffarabad-based guerrilla conglomerate, begins Friday to coincide with Eid.

However, Jammu and Kashmir police has rejected the ceasefire reports.

“There is no authentic source behind this announcement. Even if the ceasefire offer was true, why is it only for three days? Why not a permanent ceasefire?” asks Kashmir zone police chief S.M. Sahai.
