Turkish attacks on Kurds would complicate efforts to stabilize the region – Ban

By NNN-KUNA

United Nations : For the second time in a week, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday advised Turkey not to carry out a military attack on Kurds in Northern Iraq, stressing that any escalation of tension would further complicate the international community’s efforts, including those by the UN, to bring stability to this “volatile” region.

In answer to a question at the daily press briefing, his spokesperson Michele Montas said Ban is aware of the Turkish Parliament’s decision which would enable the Turkish armed forces to take cross border military action in Iraq.

However, “equally, the Secretary-General strongly encourages the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government to take decisive measures to ensure that Iraq’s territory is not used by the PKK to mount cross border attacks against Turkey,” she said.

The Turkish decision came after the PKK separatist militants hiding in northern Iraq escalated their attacks recently across the border against Turkish troops.
