The textile ministry has chalked out a three-year plan to globally market more handloom and handicraft items, from the traditional and popular shawls to wall hangers.

“We have launched a special handloom and handicrafts training programme to hone the skills of artisans to cater to international demands,” said Sahadev Singh, assistant director in the handicrafts department.

Expert designers are imparting training to local artisans. “The training will motivate weavers into exploring international markets for selling their products,” Singh said.

Local designer Lalrinsangi is helping the artisans to improve their skills.

“To attract foreign market, we have to go for new colours, slight alterations in the traditional designs, and use of quality yarn,” she said. “But we must ensure that the overall traditional outlook is not distorted.”

Added Zodinpuii, a national award winner for weaving and the owner of Mizoram’s biggest handloom and handcrafts centre: “Our aim is to gather all the skilled weavers in the state to produce good quality products for export.”

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) has agreed to act as the nodal agency for providing copyright and brand image for the handloom and handicraft products. “This would help the artisans to excel in their field,” Singh said.
