Radheshayam Singh, an assistant sub inspector (ASI) posted at Sukhdeonagar police station in Ranchi, allegedly tried to kill his wife after a quarrel with her Tuesday night.

His wife, Parvati, is now fighting for her life at a Ranchi hospital.

Singh claimed his wife was trying to commit suicide.

“My wife had locked herself in a room, poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire,” said Singh, a resident of Indrapuri Colony.

But the cop’s neighbours accused him of trying to kill his wife by setting her on fire.

“The police officer is trying to conceal facts. Parvati, a tribal, is his second wife. His first wife stays in a village. The two used to quarrel regularly. Singh tried to kill his wife and then tried to pass the blame on her,” said a neighbour.

Radheshayam was reportedly in the house when the incident took place but he did not try to save his wife. It was the neighbours who broke open the door and tried to save her. No complaint has, however, been lodged.

Police officials said a complaint would be registered only after recording Parvati’s statement.
