Addressing a function Wednesday, central minister of housing and urban poverty alleviation Kumari Selja said the project would be completed at a cost of Rs.3.9 billion.

Selja said urban poor residents and slum dwellers had been managing food and clothing but housing remained their biggest problem and the central government had decided to construct 770,000 houses for the urban poor in the country, spending around Rs.400 billion.

“The housing facilities, part of basic services for urban poor (BSUP) scheme, will give a life of dignity for the urban slum dwellers,” the minister remarked soon after unveiling a foundation stone here.

Hindustan Prefab Limited, a public sector undertaking under the housing ministry, has been appointed project management consultant. The housing complexes will come up at 61 different locations in Raipur with each one-bedroom house to have 300 sq feet carpet area.

The central government will provide 80 percent or Rs.3.1 billion for the project, while the state government and the Raipur Municipal Corporation will each contribute 10 percent or Rs.396 million.
