Washington, Oct 25 (Prensa Latina) Relatives of Iraqis murdered by agents from the US Blackwater company rejected compensation promised by the US government, considering it a maneuver to nullify future legal actions, Democracy Now radio TV reported on Thursday.
The US Embassy in Baghdad reportedly offered 12,500 dollars to relatives of the 17 people shot on September 17 in a shoot-out in which agents from Blackwater took part.
Witnesses assert that the agents were escorting a convoy of diplomats from Washington, and shot their weapons without motive against the victims.
At the beginning of October the Center for Constitutional Rights, an association defending human rights, instituted a suit against Blackwater on behalf of the relatives of the victims in the event, which also left 22 injured.
Recently the UN Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) denounced abuses committed against human rights in Iraq and specifically mentioned Blackwater as an example.
A UNAMI report urged the US government to investigate murders committed by members of security enterprises in Iraq, among them Blackwater.
