Bengal MP sent to 14 days’ judicial custody

Kolkata : Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was remanded in 14 days’ jail custody by a West Bengal court Saturday in connection with the murder of a panchayat chief in 2003.

Dipali Srivastava, the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) of Katwa in Burdwan district of the state rejected his bail plea and ordered his judicial remand till Sep 20 in connection with the murder of Mougram panchayat chief Gobordhan Ghosh.

Chowdhury, who represents Behrampore Lok Sabha constituency of Murshidabad district, was produced before the Katwa ACJM court amid tight security.

Thousands of Congress supporters assembled at the court premises and demonstrated against his arrest.

Chowdhury was sent back to the Behrampur Correctional Home after his bail plea was rejected.

Congress activists held demonstrations at Burdwan and Bazarsha stations near Katwa, about 180 km from here, protesting the rejection of his bail plea.

“Agitated party supporters blocked railway tracks near Burdwan and Bazarsha stations, affecting train services for about 45 minutes,” Eastern Railway (ER) spokesperson Deepak Jha told IANS.

The MP was arrested Friday minutes after he was granted bail in connection with the murder of a hotelier and his son in Behrampore in 2005.

He was arrested as soon as he stepped out of the court of Behrampore chief judicial magistrate in connection with two fresh cases – the murder of Gobordhan Ghosh in 2003 and for creating trouble at a polling booth at Bharatpur in Murshidabad the same year.
