These and other hints for local hotel and restaurant owners were published by the Salzburg trade chamber to improve hospitality for “exotic” guests.

Ever eager to explore new markets, Austrian tourism markets go to great lengths to attract visitors from growing markets like the Middle East, China or Japan. But cultural differences sometimes lead to misunderstandings or less than optimal service.

National or cultural traditions were still not taken into account, the trade chamber said in a press release. “Especially with guests from the Arab region, intensive response to their habits and wishes is more than worthwhile, as these guests spend on average 2,000 euros ($2,728) per day,” trade chamber tourism expert Reinhold Hauk said.

The 130-page brochure explains that it would be offensive to guests from the Arab region to request that they wear swimsuits when going to the pool, the importance of sunrise and sunset for prayer times, and that it is not customary to tip.

“Excellent service is expected,” the brochure said.

Hotel owners are also informed about Japanese couples’ preferences for separate beds and bathtubs.

“Never confuse Chinese tourists with Japanese,” hotel owners were warned and suggested only offering Chinese food that has been prepared by a Chinese chef and to tolerate noisy eating habits or spitting.

The trade chamber laid out basic guidelines for preparing kosher food, while at the same time warned hotel owners to sort out their own preconceptions. “You will have to deal with your past by yourself. If you feel guilty that your grandfather was in the SS, no Jew will be interested in hearing the details. Better consult a nice, non-Jewish therapist.”

Also included is advice on Russian drink preferences, and sensitive issues to avoid when talking to tourists from the US.
