“It’s a controversial issue but it’s true that we just can’t avoid the importance of nuclear energy in India. We should switch on to alternative energy resources to fulfil the demands,” Bhattacharya said at the National Council meeting organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here.

Emphasising on generation of green power, he said the West Bengal government was slowly progressing on this front.

“Since lots of debates are going on over this particular topic, we have decided not to take any decision now. Let the scientific advisers debate over this issue. Once they would come to a consensus we will take our final decision accordingly,” Bhattacharya said.

Reprimanding the role of certain sections of environmental experts, the chief minister said that they were acting like fundamentalists on some issues.

About 96 percent of the power requirement in West Bengal is generated by thermal power plants, Bhattacharya said.
