Bhubaneswar, Sep 17 (IANS) Five people, including two women, have been arrested from Orissa’s Cuttack city and fake currency worth Rs.300,000 seized from them, officials said Monday.
The accused had come from the neighbouring Jharkhand state and were staying in a lodge in the Banka Bajar area of Cuttack, about 25 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.
On Sunday, two of them visited a crockery store to buy some goods. The shopkeeper doubted the genuineness of the Rs.1,000 note they gave and informed the authorities, a police official told IANS.
Their room was later raided and at least 255 fake notes of different denominations were found, he said.
The five said they belonged to Jharkhand and admitted that they had come to circulate fake notes, the official said.
Nearly two months ago, police had seized fake notes worth Rs.222,000 from a paddy trader who hailed from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
Police said they had begun a probe into the matter.
