Kolkata, Sep 17 (IANS) Two foreign girls who came to India as part of a student exchange programme were allegedly harassed by two motorcyclists at Canning in West Bengal’s South 24-Parganas district.
The two men also beat up an Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) student from Kerala who protested against their behaviour with the girls who were identified as Italians, local reports said.
Reports said the incident took place Sunday when a 51-member team of students from IIM-C, Italy, Germany and Belgium was returning to the IIM-C campus after a visit to Gosaba in the Sundarbans.
Two motorcyclists harassed the girls when they got off their car to buy some drinks near a petrol pump at Dockghat.
The South 24 Parganas police picked up the offenders and their bikes were also impounded for “harassing” the Italian girls.
District Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar said the men were detained on the basis of some eyewitness account that said the duo beat up the IIM-C students and teased the girls near a petrol pump. He told IANS he had not received any official complaint about the incident.
“We have not received any official complaint and so we have not started any case against them. We don’t know if the students were Italians or Germans,” Kumar said.
