New Delhi : Two Pakistani militants of the terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) were killed in a fierce gun battle in Jammu in a joint operation of the Delhi Police, the Kashmir Police and the army, the police said here Tuesday.
Abu Bakr and Tariq Mohammed, both Pakistani nationals, were gunned down in a four-hour gun-battle near Kyar village in Bandipora area early Tuesday, the police said here.
“There were three militants. They hurled grenades at the police team in an attempt to escape, but in the firing that ensued two were killed while their third associate, Amanullah Bukhari, managed to escape,” said Delhi Police Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh.
The police recovered two AK-56 assault rifles, eight magazines, 152 live cartridges of AK-47 assault rifle, and two hand grenades from the slain militants.
The police said they had learnt about the three militants during interrogation of two JeM terrorists – Mohammed Aslam Wan and Khursheed Ahmad Bhatt, both from Kashmir – who were arrested in the capital in August 2005.
The police had recovered five kg RDX, six hand grenades, 10 electronic detonators, two pistols, a magazine, 87 live cartridges, and Rs.6.3 million in cash from them.
During interrogation, Aslam and Khursheed had disclosed the name of their associate Amanullah Bukhari, a Pakistani national operating in Jammu for over seven years, Singh said.
“Earlier this month, specific information was received that JeM militant Bukhari with other Pakistani militants was spotted in Kyar village. A special team was constituted with the help of Special Operation Group (SOG) of the Kashmir Police and 81 Mountain Brigade and 57 Rashtriya Rifles of the army,” Singh added.
The militants were asked to surrender, but they opened fire, and in the retaliatory fire two of them were killed, he said.
