Colombo : Air force jets bombed a Tamil rebel ammunition dump in north-eastern Sri Lanka as air strikes continued for the second consecutive day in the area, an air force spokesman said Thursday.
The ammunition dump in Pudukudiirippu in Mullaitivu, 380 km north-east of the capital, was bombed Thursday morning, following intelligence reports and air reconnoissance carried out in the area, the military spokesman said.
The pilots observed a string of explosions lasting more than an hour after the bombing, indicating that a large amount of ammunition and explosives had been stored there, he said.
The air force carried out a similar attack in the same area on Wednesday and claimed they destroyed a rebel base in the region.
In a separate incident, three rebels were killed in a clash with security forces in Vavuniya, 240 km north of the capital Colombo Wednesday.
Fighting in the north and eastern parts of the country has escalated during the past 22 months with more than 5,200 deaths. During the period the military has claimed to recapture rebel controlled areas in the eastern province and to have confined the rebels to parts of the north.
