Heavy rains lash Gujarat

Ahmedabad : Heavy rains lashed Saurasthra and parts of central Gujarat Thursday and Friday, even as the metrological department announced that the monsoon is on retreat mode.

Upleta town in Rajkot district saw a heavy downpour, with around seven inches of rain on Thursday, throwing normal life out of gear.

Ahmedabad witnessed gales and thunderstorms accompanied by a downpour Thursday.

Farmers in the state are worried as the sudden burst of rains could play havoc to the standing kharif crops including cotton.

According to the state emergency response centre, Pardi in Valsad district had five inches of rainfall while Amreli, Bhavnagar and Vanthali recorded four inches.

In all, 97 talukas of the state received rainfall Thursday. Of them, 15 talukas recorded three to seven inches of rain while the rest recorded up to two inches of rainfall.

The met department has forecast moderate to heavy rain for the state during the next 24 hours.
