The Iranian president made the promise to Haneya during their phone conversation on Saturday evening, Haneya’s office said in a statement.

“Haneya has briefed the Iranian president on the latest political developments and stressed on the Palestinian people’s political and geographical unity,” the statement said.

Hamas has seized control of the Gaza Strip since June after fighting with forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, effectively separating its political unity with the West Bank where Abbas’ Fatah movement still dominant.

During U.N. General Assembly meetings in New York, President Ahmadinejad will “work efficiently to lift the siege on the Palestinian people and the Islamic Republic will keep supporting the Palestinian people,” said Haneya office’s statement.

Abbas fired a Hamas-led coalition following the Gaza takeover and formed a Western-backed government ruling from the West Bank, leaving Hamas confined to the Gaza Strip.
