Chennai : Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK party Monday gave a call for a statewide strike Oct 1 to press its demand for the speedy implementation of the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project.
The Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) consisting of all allies of the DMK adopted a resolution to this effect after a two-hour meeting at the DMK headquarters here.
“We have decided to take on the communal forces and their wily objective of halting the project,” Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi told reporters after the meeting.
“A public meeting to be addressed by all the DPA leaders will be held on Sep 30 to explain the need for the bandh (strike) to the masses,” he said.
The DPA also demanded the immediate arrest of “religious chauvinist” Ram Vilas Vedanti, a former MP of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), for his reported call to assassinate Karunanidhi.
