The Magna Carta is the charter that enshrined the rights of man into English law, and inspired the passion for liberty that flowered in the US in the 18th century and continues around the world. It is considered the most famous single document in existence.

The Magna Carta – Latin for ‘Great Charter’ – was originally issued in 1215 by King John. The copy offered by Sotheby’s for sale was issued by King Edward I in 1297.

This astonishing survivor is one of fewer than 20 copies of the Magna Carta, and the only one ever likely to be sold.

This medieval vellum manuscript is well-known to millions, having been on view with the Declaration of Independence and the American Constitution at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. It was brought to the US over 22 years ago when it was bought by the Perot Foundation.

This is one of only two copies of the Magna Carta outside Britain. The other is in Australia.

The document is estimated to sell for $20-30 million with the proceeds benefiting the charitable activities of The Perot Foundation.
