Kolkata : Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member Brinda Karat Friday expressed her grief over the mysterious death of a Muslim youth who had married the daughter of an industrialist Ashok Todi, and demanded punishment for those involved in the crime.
Rizwanur, a 30-year-old graphics designer, was found dead with head injuries beside a railway track Sep 21. His family members and neighbours alleged he used to get threatening calls from some police officers after he married Priyanka.
“It is a very sad incident. Whosoever is guilty should be punished,” she said.
Brinda also visited the victim’s residence at Tiljala Lane in central Kolkata to offer her condolence to his family members.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) quizzed Priyanka Todi, Rizwanur’s widow, Friday at her Salt lake residence on the northeastern fringes of the city.
Priyanka had been summoned by CID officials to appear before them for interrogation along with her father Thursday, but she did not turn up. Her lawyers said she was not in good health.
Meanwhile, former West Bengal chief minister Sidhartha Shankar Roy has written an open letter to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, demanding a proper inquiry into the case. He also criticised senior Kolkata police officials, including the police commissioner, for trying to play down the incident.
“There should be an independent judicial inquiry into the incident,” Roy said.
The chief minister Thursday had ordered a judicial probe into the mysterious death of the Muslim youth.
Main opposition Trinamool Congress has however demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the episode and punishment of the erring police officials.
Rizwanur was in touch with Sujato Bhadra of the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR), a human rights body, before his death and had given written complaints of harassment by top cops.
Bhadra said a letter by Rehman clearly mentioned the names of top cops like Gyanwant Singh (deputy commissioner of police headquarters), Ajay Kumar (deputy commissioner, detective department-I) and police officer Sukanta Chakraborty as the ones who harassed him.
